AFL Showcasing Glass Processing and Fiber Technology at SPIE Photonics West 2021

Spartanburg, SC – AFL, an industry-leading manufacturer of fiber optic cable, equipment and accessories, is exhibiting at the virtual SPIE Photonics West and showcasing the LZM-125 LAZERMaster splicing and glass processing system, the Fujikura FSM-100P/P+ with new observation method, Fujikura CT+ LDF (large diameter fiber) cleavers and 500°C metal-coated specialty optical fiber. Visit AFL virtually to learn more about these new products:
AFL’s new LZM-125 LAZERMaster® Splicing System is a splicing, glass processing system and fiber ablation machine that uses a CO2 laser heat source to perform splicing, tapering, lensing ablation and other glass shaping operations with glass diameters up to 2.0 mm. The high-resolution optical analysis system works in conjunction with on-board firmware for fully automatic splicing, tapering and other glass shaping processes. The new LZM-125 series includes a self-contained workstation.

The Fujikura FSM-100P/P+ specialty fiber fusion splicer includes a new observation method for fiber rotational alignment. IPA2 provides an enhanced alignment technique for shaped and multi-core fibers and keeps the previously existing FSM100P/P+ alignment capabilities. IPA2 provides a new set of tools for aligning fibers that are less common or more difficult to align with our existing methods.

The Fujikura LDF Cleavers cleave fibers up to 1,250 μm and has the ability to provide both flat (CT-104+ and CT-105+) and angled cleaves (CT-106+) using an automatic clamping system with programmable force. The new CT+ series has an automatic clamping force feature that quickly sets the optimum clamping force which is critical for providing quality cleaves without damaging the fiber. The new blade material provides at least a 5X increase in cleaver blade life. The color LCD shows cleaving progress and recommended insert size depending on fiber coating and cladding diameter, and the USB port allows for saving and storing cleaving programs to a PC or tablet.

The 500°C Metal-Coated Optical Fibers VHT500 single-mode and VHT5000 multimode fibers feature advanced glass chemistries for improved performance in hydrogen-rich environments, and excellent optical performance in permanent, long-term exposure to temperatures up to 500°C. Additionally, AFL has developed a broad range of medical optical fibers to address the needs of minimally-invasive diagnostic and surgical procedures. AFL’s medical offering includes both sensing fibers as well as Laser Power Delivery designs. Medical fibers are available in a broad range of designs including diameters from 80 µm to 2 mm.
