AFL Presents $5K Grant to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate

04/07/2021
Spartanburg, SC – AFL, an international manufacturer of fiber optic cable, connectivity and accessories, provided a $5,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate, an organization devoted to inspiring and enabling young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The grant is made possible by AFL’s Community Outreach Program and will provide support for the STEAM program.

“Our STEAM program exists to improve poor academic performance of students in math and science,” explained Greg Tolbert, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate. “With a focused effort on science, technology, engineering, arts and math, our kids experience projects that are engaging and spark curiosity. It is our hope that this translates to continued STEAM interest throughout high school, into college and as they enter the workplace.”

Students enrolled in the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate are in grades 1-5 and regularly attend the Clubs located in six high poverty Spartanburg County elementary schools. The STEAM program seeks to make STEAM fun and applicable to life for students. The program supports youth development and covers all aspects of STEAM including Science (Afterschool Kidz Science), Technology and Arts (Photography Club), Engineering (Junior LEGO® Robotics) and Math (Afterschool KidzMath).

AFL’s grant targets two of BGCU’s most popular programs—Junior LEGO Robotics and the Photography Club. Funds will provide laptops needed for the LEGO Robotics program and digital cameras with accessories for the Photography Club. The grant will also provide needed support for a contracted STEM specialist.

AFL’s Community Outreach Program includes grants, sponsorships, volunteer and environment initiatives, disaster relief, scholarships and more. For additional information on AFL, its products and services, visit www.AFLglobal.com.
