AFL Forms MERG Group for Veterans, Presents Check to Upstate Warrior Solution

08/12/2018

Spartanburg, SC – AFL, an international manufacturer of fiber optic cable, connectivity and equipment, announces the formation of MERG, Military Employee Resource Group. In forming this group, AFL partnered with Upstate Warrior Solution, an organization dedicated to connecting warriors and their families to resources and opportunities, and presented a $5,000 check in support of their efforts.

“Upstate Warrior Solution has been proud to partner with AFL for the past several years,” said Charlie Hall, executive director of Upstate Warrior Solution (UWS). “Our team sees the value of corporate groups in our community forming military and veteran employee resource groups in order to provide a more positive experience for transitioning veterans entering the workplace and offering mentorship opportunities within the company as well. AFL’s financial support to our organization is empowering us to better serve our warriors and their families, especially in Spartanburg County.”

AFL’s MERG program will focus on three areas—recruiting transitioning service members, providing ongoing support for AFL’s current workforce and providing a forum for AFL’s veterans to collaborate in support of community service activities. AFL currently employs more than 100 veterans. Brent Pipkin, Transportation and Travel Manager for AFL and Army veteran will serve as the MERG chairman.

“AFL’s veterans play a critical role in our growth and success,” commented Brent Pipkin, transportation and travel manager, and team lead of MERG. “The skills and experiences developed during their time in service are invaluable and further strengthen AFL's core values. The MERG program will serve as a collaborative support network focused on servicing the needs of its veterans as well as those veterans in need within the local community.”
